Summary
This report has been prepared in the context of Work Package 9 “Town Studies” which is part of the third phase of DUMAS (Developing Urban Management And Safety) project.
The DUMAS project was commissioned to consider current practices of Urban Safety Management (USM) and to produce frameworks for the design and evaluation of cost-effective and successful urban safety initiatives.
The report describes the work in Gladsaxe with traffic safety over the last 10-15 years. Especially focus has been put on speed management and an evaluation of two of the implemented speed management schemes in Gladsaxe is presented.
The idea behind the two speed management projects was to carry out experiments in two residential districts, in which a zone with a speed limit of 40 km/h was established. This was achieved by erecting speed limit signs together with the introduction of speed-reducing measures, but to a lesser extent compared to traditional speed management schemes.
The results of the evaluation of the speed management project were mainly positive. Considerable speed reductions have been achieved, and in a questionnaire-based survey the inhabitants have expressed general satisfaction with both the results, the involvement of the residents and the information the municipality supplied to the residents before, during and after implementation of the project.
Resident involvement and information were given particular priority in the experimental projects, and in recent years the municipality has given prominence to this in road and transport projects.
The report has been published by The Danish Road Directorate - note 75.
